Whilst I was on the Metallica shoot, I saw a photo of Lars’ father. Torben. I knew I’d love to photograph him. I asked Lars and he said he’s really fragile but he’d get back to me. Torben is 94!! These days, he is a loving partner to Molly. He’s a father to Lars. He’s a grandfather to Myles, Bryce and Layne! He’s also a prolific artist and musician! Back in the day, Torben was an elite tennis player who traveled the world on the professional tour! When you look into Torben’s eyes, they glisten… with the fire of chasing down a high lob from the baseline! Yes! He’s still that tennis player! “It was just yesterday”… he expressed!
…Unfortunately, these days, Torben’s body doesn’t cooperate much with his mind. Frailty keeps him indoors and if I was to to photograph him, it would have to be done inside. I was taken to his house by the wonderful @brettmurrayphotography and I had 30 sparkling minutes of his company. Brett set up some lights… and, whilst being charmed by his charismatic stories, I shot some beautiful frames…
This image is my favourite! (I have others that will blow your mind!). Knowing how close Lars is to his father I figured this portrait, which is almost transcendent, would be a precious thing for him to keep, forever. Without letting Lars know, I had it made… and sent it over to him. Judging by his reaction, I think he likes it 🖤
Forever! It’s a powerful word! Before we know it, “these days”… soon become… “those days”. Best we fill them now, with the people… and the things we love to do! Then, who knows, years from now, we too, may be lucky enough to reach 94… and just like Torben, still be hitting those proverbial winners!!
